About Party Fears Three

Party Fears Three are now firmly established as one of the UK's leading and most highly respected eighties covers bands (tribute, if you will) celebrating the music and sounds of what is still regarded by many as one the most innovative and enduring periods in music ever.

Generally, we cover what many regard as the classic early to mid eighties period although we occasionally allow ourselves to drift a little either side of this if there's a good tune at the end of it that fits into our set. Typically, this means bands such as Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Tears For Fears, Human League, Talk Talk, New Order and A-ha, to name but a few, plus, of course, the band from whose biggest hit we take our name.

Using a combination of modern technology and vintage instrumentation, our aim is to produce shows that in terms of sound and visuals strongly evoke the bands of the time but are also stamped with our own identity - making them an interesting and appealing prospect for anyone that has an affinity for the great music of this era and something a little different from what you might expect from conventional tribute bands.

"Their 're-engineering' of songs by Depeche Mode, Ultravox and The Human League were as good as I had hoped, and probably a bit better"

Daily Record

In recent years Party Fears Three have also enjoyed a number of high profile support slots with established eighties acts such as The Beat, Bad Manners and Steve Strange. In 2012, the band also headlined at the UK's leading tribute band festival TribFest which has since become a regular fixture and rounded off the year with a high profile date in London where they were joined on stage by eigthies luminaries Peter Godwin and Ultravox's Warren Cann for a special performance of Peter's much loved 1982 club hit 'Images Of Heaven'. More recently in 2015 they were supported by Jo Callis of Human League and Rezillos fame and the following spring were honoured to be invited to collaborate with Jo at a special show where he performed a number of his classic Human League songs live for the very first time.

Liquid Rooms gig with Jo Callis/FingerHalo – Sat 30th May

May 29th, 2015

So, tomorrow the wait is finally over! All the preparations are ready and we’re really looking forward to our first headline show at THE LIQUID ROOM, a fantastic venue previously graced by many an artist that light PF3’s fire, including Howard Jones, The Psychedelic Furs, Saint Etienne and not forgetting tonight, none other than The Buzzcocks!

Tickets will be available on the door tomorrow for those that still need them and we know from experience that many people do leave it until the night, so please get there early to avoid a queue – we had to delay our start last time to get everyone in, but tomorrow we’re going to have to stay bang on schedule to avoid cutting our set short so please don’t risk missing anything! But of course, why would you want to miss our fantastic support act, FingerHalo – featuring of course former The Human League and The Rezillos guitarist Jo Callis, the man behind some of this particular scribe’s favourite ever songs. We hear rumblings that he’ll be dipping into his back catalogue as well as playing newer tracks tomorrow and that Human League fans are unlikely to be disappointed… so don’t dilly dally!

FH are on stage at 7.30PM with us following immediately afterwards. Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for what looks like being a very special night indeed.

Party Fears Three plus FingerHalo (featuring Jo Callis) – Saturday 30th May at The Liquid Room, Edinburgh

March 15th, 2015

Party Fears Three plus FingerHalo

Party Fears Three are back! Our next Edinburgh show will be on Saturday 30th May 2015, at The Liquid Room in Edinburgh. Hot on the heels of our sold-out show last December, expect another night packed full of classic hits from the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Pet Shop Boys, Ultravox, Simple Minds, Erasure and many more in a fast paced full length show that will appeal to anyone who loves the irresistible sounds of this much-loved decade – still regarded by many as one the most innovative and enduring periods in music ever.

But not only will this be our biggest show yet on home turf – this time, we’re also going to be joined by some very special guests indeed!

Jo Callis will surely need no introduction to many of our fans through his pivotal contribution to the genre defining work of The Human League – not to mention Edinburgh punk/new wave legends The Rezillos. So we’re absolutely delighted to be able to reveal that, along with his new band FingerHalo, Jo has kindly agreed to join us on the 30th and open the show!

It’s all punk rock to English-born, Edinburgh-based Jo. If you think you know him from League hits DYWM, Love Action, The Lebanon and Louise, plus Rezillos chart toppers Can’t Stand My Baby, Top Of The Pops and Destination Venus – you’re not wrong, but be prepared to think again when you experience FingerHalo live.

Don’t ask what they sound like – ask what they don’t sound like. Inspired by the rock’n’roll that led him to pick up a ukulele at the age of 10, ferocious live guitarist Jo will deliver gutsy, rebellious new takes on some of the songs he’s best known for, some he learned his trade from, and new tracks that point to the future. Expect explosive energy.

Tickets for the show are being printed as we speak and will be on sale shortly, priced at £10 in advance, from all usual outlets. We’ll let know all the details as soon as we have them! In the meantime, mark the date in your diary – this is a show you will not want to miss.

YouTube Videos

Our media section on this site is admittedly a little out of date but don’t forget, there is a whole range of video clips from some of our recent shows for you to enjoy over on our YouTube Channel!

Steve Strange 1959-2015

February 12th, 2015

Party Fears Three are saddened tonight to learn of the untimely passing of Steve Strange. As some of you will remember, we supported Steve a few years ago during his last visit to Edinburgh and he was a pleasure to meet and work with. It was a true privilege to share a stage with such a legendary figure from back in the day and no-one can dispute that the contribution he made to both the music and the scene itself was very significant. His place in the history books of both fashion and popular music is assured and deserved.

Thank you

December 29th, 2014

A huge thank you to everyone who came to see us at Electric Circus last night and in particular those who came such a long distance especially to see us (it means a lot). We can’t tell you how thrilled were to be playing to what did in the end turn out to be a capacity crowd – we could see the queue stretching down the street as we sneaked in through the back door before starting the show so we decided to hold off for an extra ten minutes to give everyone a chance to get in, so we hope none of you missed any of the songs. As ever, a special thanks to all the staff at Electric Circus who always look after us so well and in particular Joe on the sound desk who always does such a great job making us sound as good as we possibly can. Thank you also to Robert for invaluable technical help on the night and to Jessica for bravely allowing us to talk her into starring in a couple of our newer videos. And finally, to all of you who sung and cheered so loud we nearly missed our cue for the next song on quite a few occasions! Here’s the set list and it just remains for us to thank you again for all your support in 2014 and to wish you a very happy 2015.

Christmas Gig latest update

December 22nd, 2014

Just one week to go until our special Christmas show at Electric Circus here in Edinburgh!

We have been blown away by the response to this gig and at time of writing we have sold way more in advance than for any other show to date. Tickets are still available at the usual outlets but we hear stocks are now running low so don’t delay! You can also buy tickets online using the link above if you don’t fancy venturing out and battling your way through the last minute shoppers. Either way, we can’t make any promises about availability on the door – if there are tickets left, it will be fine but it is strictly subject to availabilty so best to book in advance if at all possible (and save a few quid while you’re at it as the door price will be higher).

A quick reminder about timings – we’ll be following our usual format of a two hour set with a half time break of approx 20-30 minutes so that means an onstage time of 7.30PM (doors at 7.00PM). There is no support band. We need to be off stage by 10.00PM so that we can clear the stage in time for Magic Nostalgic Edinburgh which follows straight after the gig – don’t forget your ticket also covers you for this as well, so please do stick around and enjoy a night of pop-tastic hits right through until the early hours (we’ll have a word and make sure some eighties categories are on the wheel)!

That’s it for now – see you next week and in the meantimne, do have a very happy Christmas.

Mike, Steve and Don.

Summer Flashback

December 1st, 2014

As the year draws to an end we find ourselves looking back at what has been another exciting year for the band. There were many highlights but for us our favourite has probably been this show we did for our friends Chris and Gill Scott at their wedding in July. Chris is a big fan of the band and wanted to go all out to put on the best show possible and it was a particular thrill for us to be able to put on our show in a large venue with production values to match.
